‘Gaining a toehold in the world of publishing can be tricky. Once you are in, if you have the requisite talent and drive, things can happen, but penetrating that wall is the hard part. I am delighted to be associated with an editorial cadetship that will transform people’s careers. I hope that ABR readers will join me in supporting this invaluable program.’
Peter Rose (Editor and CEO, 2001-25)
One of Peter Rose’s many legacies as Editor and CEO of Australian Book Review has been his dedicated mentorship of young editors. During his twenty-four years at ABR, Rose has trained and encouraged countless editors. Many of them have gone on to senior positions in publishing and journalism, sometimes at ABR. Our new Editor, Dr Georgina Arnott, is a perfect example, having joined the ABR staff in 2022. So is Will Hunt, who excelled as a Monash University intern in 2023 and duly became Assistant Editor in 2024. These outstanding success stories typify ABR’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of editors and publishers, and to ensuring that the magazine attracts and rewards talent and ambition.
In recognition of Rose’s extraordinary contributions as a mentor, ABR is delighted to establish the Peter Rose Editorial Cadetship. This opportunity will offer an aspiring editor a rich and multi-faceted experience, one that will equip them for a successful career. Over the course of twelve months, the cadet will receive extensive training in all facets of magazine publishing and the principles of editing in a supportive and collegial environment. Our aim will be to empower the cadet, who will be given every opportunity to innovate and help us improve the magazine.
This will be the tenth cadetship since 2009. Sadly, these opportunities are increasingly rare in the sector. As in the past, we anticipate enormous interest from eager and talented candidates hoping to break into publishing. Whoever is chosen will enjoy a unique entrée to the busy, creative, successful force that is ABR. ABR’s cadetship program is highly regarded in the publishing industry. Publishers recognise that ABR cadets receive high-quality editorial instruction, a hands-on introduction to a vast range of publishing tasks and platforms, experience in a lean, entrepreneurial organisation, and a strong grounding in Australia’s literary heritage and its diverse contemporary cultures.
To extend Peter Rose’s legacy of editorial mentorship and to foster talent within the sector at large, we very much hope the cadetship will become an annual fixture.
Please consider supporting this important program, which honours Peter Rose’s achievements and will help to enable the next generation of editors to take up his mantle. Our hope is that we will be able to advertise the Peter Rose Editorial Cadetship in coming months. With your support, the chosen cadet will join us soon at this auspicious time in the magazine’s long history and will help ensure ABR’s continuing success.
